Ethicon Endo-Surgery said it has a definitive agreement to purchase SurgRx in Redwood City, CA. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Both companies make complementary surgical devices, Ethicon said in a news release. SurgRx’s EnSeal line, a bipolar tissue sealing system, will provide a new platform for Ethicon’s Harmonic line of ultrasound devices used in open and minimally invasive surgeries.

“Together, the combination of Harmonic and EnSeal technologies will position us to better address many different procedure needs,” said Karen Licitra, community group chairman and worldwide franchise chairman for Blue Ash-based Ethicon.

SurgRx was founded in 2002 to develop and manufacture the EnSeal line of products and has 21 patents for the devices. Ethicon Endo-Surgery is a unit of Johnson & Johnson, headquartered in New Brunswick, NJ.
